Our Purpose and Intention

Mission

Through events, advocacy, and education, Bike Durham empowers all people to walk, bike, and ride transit more often.

Vision

Everyone should have access to safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation regardless of who they are or where they live.

Intention

The success of Bike Durham’s Statement of Purpose depends on internal equity and diversity. As such, Bike Durham is committed to Bicycle Equity as defined by Slow Roll Chicago:

Bicycle Equity demands a public commitment to intentional diversity and radical inclusion within the bicycle advocacy, transportation and urban planning sectors as well as the broader cycling community. Equity is the promise to reflect diversity in a way which is intentional, deliberate and operational. This means achieving real inclusion is something that is beyond the realm of normal effort and is the extra effort required to be inclusive of people who have traditionally been marginalized, disadvantaged and disenfranchised in our society. (Slow Roll Chicago Bicycle Equity, February 2019)

Bike Durham is committed to the work of equity internally and externally. We appreciate the encouragement and patience of our community partners as we grow. Likewise, as we expand and learn we will likely modify the statements above to clarify our purpose.

Community Agreements

At Bike Durham, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment, especially in spaces where diverse individuals come together to collaborate on common goals. We recognize the complexity of individuals' identities and intersections, emphasizing the importance of establishing a secure and welcoming framework. This foundation not only promotes enthusiastic consent and wholehearted dedication to our shared efforts but also serves as a guide for addressing issues or conflicts that may arise. Furthermore, it acts as a collaboratively developed roadmap for engaging in right relationship with one another.

strategic plan

Bike Durham’s Board of Directors adopted a three-year strategic plan in April 2024 to guide the organization’s development over through mid-2027. Read an overview of the plan at this link.

Bike Durham has adopted bylaws in compliance with applicable requirements to guide the Board’s governance.
