The Koala & The Pretzel

Week 2: The Koala & The Pretzel

MAY 8 - 15, 2020

Draw up the city together with two long rides: Tour de Kola and The Big Jim Pretzel.

TOUR DE KOALA is a work of downtown Durham GPS art that you draw by following the bike route. Add your own artistic interpretation, but stay safe and obey traffic rules. Do you have the necessary koalafications to finish this 18 mile route around downtown Durham?

The koala or, inaccurately, koala bear, (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial not native to Durham. That's too bad, so let's draw one! Koalas are asocial animals and scientists have averaged their social behavior to be limited to around 15 minutes a day, making them a great model for social distancing.

THE BIG JIM PRETZEL is inspired by the classic Philly pretzel shape and the detailed routes of longtime Bike Durham volunteer Jim Hambrick. At 43.1 miles, this is a long route, but it spends more than 50% of ride time on trails instead of roads. The route stretches from downtown Durham all the way to Cary Park Lake. If the weather is fabulous, your experience will probably be too.

Please note that this event is not meant to encourage social gathering and the routes listed are not an organized group ride. Instead, this is a curated route that you can do on your own at any time during the specified event dates. We ask that you abide by the current state and local rules regarding face coverings and maintaining a safe distance from others.
Please complete the following waiver of liability before embarking on any of the Bike Durham GPS routes: https://forms.gle/7kTfPJ7YmbeA7vw86
