Bike Month DIY Rides

May was a busy month for Bike Durham, hosting several DIY rides in honor of Bike Month, including a scavenger hunt, a Star Wars inspired ride, and encouraged cyclists and other community members to ride their bikes to work.

May the Fourth be with You! In an ode to Star Wars, Bike Durham designed a route inspired by the shape of the Star Wars Tie Fighter, taking public roads (paved and unpaved) creating lines to build the shape of the fighter ship.

The Bike Durham Scavenger Hunt returned this year from May 24 to May 31. This year’s scavenger hunt explored the four points of the compass, with four different routes: North Durham, South Durham, East Durham, and West Durham. Participants answered questions about stops along the way to win prizes, including helmets, Bike Durham t-shirts, and gift certificates to local bike shops.

National Bike to Work Day takes place on the third Friday in May each year, right in the middle of National Bike Month. The observance encourages us to bike to work, but it also raises awareness of cyclists as they commute to and from work each day.

Even though Bike Month is over, it’s not too late to try out our May the Fourth be With You route, and it’s always a good day to ride your bike to work!
